Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project
collaboration of support from the Wildlife Protection Office and the Jumeirah Group

Dubai's one and only turtle rehabilitation project was started by Kevin Hyland, Dubai Wildlife Protection Office, over 4 years ago. With the support from Warren and his team, the project has become extremely popular. and highly successful.

The project's goal is to receive sick or injured turtles and to rehabilitate them before releasing them back into their environment. This task is made a lot easier with the facilities that are available to the team; which range from the professional veterinary expertise from the Al Wasl Veterinary Clinic and their state of the art facilities, to the resources and quarantine space at the Burj Al Arab. Turtles undergoing rehabilitation spend their final stages of recovery at the turtle enclosure located at the Mina A' Salam hotel next to the Burj Al Arab. Once the team is satisfied with the status of the rehabilitated turtles, final blood sampling tests are carried out and once given the all clear, plans are then made to release the turtles.

Most of the turtles that are released are flipper tagged but occasionally when finance permits, the team will fix a satellite tag so that they can monitor where the turtle goes once released. The projects most recenltly tagged turtle, "Dibba" was released from Kalba on the East coast of the U.A.E. and travelled over 8,700 km to the Andaman Islands.

Currently, the project is releasing 60 plus rehabilitated turtles every year and is considered one of the largest projects of its kind in the world.
